If you live in Southern California, you already know the feeling. The air turns dry. The temperature jumps. The wind picks up, and somewhere behind your eyes, a familiar pressure starts to build. Santa Ana winds are a real migraine trigger for many people, and a growing body of research explains why.²

These winds do not act through just one path. They bring sudden heat, a sharp drop in humidity, fast pressure changes, and sometimes wildfire smoke, all at once. For a brain prone to migraine, that is a lot of change to handle in a single day.

Here is what the research says about why Santa Ana winds affect people with migraine, and what you can do about it.

A 2026 study that followed more than 7,000 people with migraine in a desert region of Israel for over two decades found that heat and low humidity made spikes in air pollution a stronger trigger for migraine attacks, while cold, damp weeks made fine-particle pollution hit harder.¹ Santa Ana winds create a similar hot, dry, pollution-shifting environment along the Southern California coast, so this research offers a reasonable, though not proven, explanation for why people notice the same pattern here.

Santa Ana winds also share their basic physics with foehn winds, a general term for warm, dry winds that form when air is forced down the side of a mountain range. A 2025 Swiss study found that these winds raised the risk of weather-related hospitalization, especially when they brought high heat.³ That heat-and-dryness combination is exactly what a Santa Ana event brings to the coast.

What is happening during a Santa Ana wind event?

Santa Ana winds form when high pressure builds over the Great Basin, the dry region east of the Sierra Nevada. Air flows from that high-pressure area down toward the coast. As it drops in elevation, the air compresses and heats up, and it loses whatever moisture it had. By the time it reaches the coast, it is hot, bone-dry, and moving fast.

This single event changes several things around you at once:

  • Temperature often jumps well above the seasonal average, sometimes within hours.
  • Humidity can fall from a comfortable range down into the single digits.
  • Barometric pressure shifts as the wind pattern moves through.
  • Dust and pollen get lifted into the air and carried long distances.
  • Wildfire risk rises sharply, since dry vegetation and strong wind are the two ingredients fire needs most.

Any one of these changes could be a mild threshold-raiser on its own. Together, they can add up fast.

Why do dry, warm winds set off migraine?

There is no single confirmed mechanism. Several plausible pathways likely act together.

Heat and dehydration. A sudden jump in temperature raises your body's demand for fluids. Dehydration is a well-known migraine trigger on its own. Santa Ana wind events can trigger off-season heat waves in Southern California, and the power shutoffs utilities use to prevent wind-driven wildfires can leave people without air conditioning right when temperatures spike, which makes staying hydrated and cool even harder.

Fast drops in humidity. Your sinuses and nasal passages are used to a certain moisture level. When humidity drops quickly, those tissues dry out and become irritated, which can refer pain into the same trigeminal nerve pathways involved in migraine. This is one reason Santa Ana winds are so closely tied to sinus pressure and headache, not just classic migraine.

Pressure changes. Like other regional wind events, Santa Ana winds move through as pressure systems shift. A 2024 review of weather and migraine found that variables like pressure, humidity, and wind are tied to migraine risk in some studies, but the overall effect is modest and inconsistent from one person to the next.

Dust and airborne particles. Strong wind lifts fine dust, pollen, and other irritants into the air. Some people with migraine are sensitive to strong smells and airborne irritants, which can activate the same trigeminal pathway that carries migraine pain.

Wildfire smoke, when a fire is burning. This part is easy to overstate, so it is worth being precise. A 2025 review of the Los Angeles wildfires found that Santa Ana winds usually improve air quality by sweeping pollution out over the ocean, but when a wildfire is actively burning, the same winds instead carry smoke and fine particles into populated areas, sometimes far from the fire itself. That smoke may carry more risk than everyday pollution. A 2024 San Diego County study found people were more likely to visit the emergency department after exposure to wildfire-specific fine particles than after similar exposure to fine particles from other sources. A 2023 systematic review of 12 studies and more than 4 million participants found a consistent link between fine particle air pollution and migraine activity, so a Santa Ana wind combined with active fire smoke is the higher-risk combination, not the wind alone.

What about "positive ions"? A note on a popular theory

You may have heard that Santa Ana winds carry an excess of positive ions, and that this charge in the air is what triggers headaches and low mood. This idea is old, and it shows up often in California folklore about the winds.

The honest answer is that the science behind it is weak. The original studies on air ions and mood or headache are decades old, small, and have not been reliably repeated with modern methods. It is not something Haven can confirm or recommend basing your prevention plan on. The heat, dehydration, dryness, and pressure changes that come with Santa Ana winds have much stronger and more current evidence behind them, and they are also things you can act on.

How to protect yourself before and during a Santa Ana wind event

You cannot stop the wind. You can lower your baseline threshold so it takes more to tip you into an attack.

Watch the forecast, not just the wind. Wind advisories are issued a day or more ahead. Use that lead time. If you know a Santa Ana event is coming, that is the day to be strict about sleep, meals, and hydration, not the day to let things slide.

Hydrate ahead of time, not just during. Dry air pulls moisture from your body through your skin and breath, often before you feel thirsty. Start increasing fluids the day before a forecast wind event, not after your mouth feels dry.

Protect your sinuses. A saline nasal rinse or spray helps keep nasal tissue from drying out and becoming irritated. If you are indoors often during the event, a humidifier in your bedroom can help.

Reduce dust and pollen exposure. Keep windows closed during high-wind hours. Wraparound sunglasses cut down on both bright light and airborne particles reaching your eyes, two triggers in one step.

Check air quality if there is an active fire. Santa Ana winds and wildfires often arrive together in fall. If a fire is burning anywhere upwind, check the Air Quality Index before planning outdoor time, and run a HEPA air purifier indoors if smoke moves in.

Keep your acute medication within reach. If you already know Santa Ana events are a personal trigger, having your acute treatment on hand and using it early in an attack works better than waiting.

Track the pattern. Log wind events in your headache diary alongside your usual triggers. Over one or two Santa Ana seasons, this will tell you whether wind itself is your trigger, or whether it is really the heat, the dryness, or the smoke riding along with it. That distinction changes what you should focus on preventing.
