Creating a Migraine-Friendly Home and Workplace

Living with migraine means your environment can make a big difference. Small changes at home or at work can lower your daily “cup” level and prevent attacks from spilling over.
Lighting
Bright or flickering lights are common triggers.
- Incandescent bulbs are often the most migraine-friendly.
- LEDs with dimming features are better than fluorescent lights.
- Position screens at eye level and use high-refresh-rate monitors.
Noise
Constant or unpredictable noise adds strain.
- Try noise-filtering headphones like AirPods Pro.
- Ask for a workstation away from high-traffic areas if you’re in an office.
Scents and Chemicals
Strong fragrances and harsh cleaners often make migraine worse.
- Choose fragrance-free or essential-oil–based products.
- Look for items rated safe by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Air Quality
Wildfire smoke, pollution, or even poor indoor ventilation can increase migraine frequency.
- Invest in a strong HEPA air filter, especially in high-pollution regions.
- Stay indoors during wildfire smoke events when possible.
